چکیده

20 Lathyrus cicera is a grain legume that is well adapted to grow in low rainfall regions. 21 However, it contains a neurotoxin, 3-(-N-oxylyl)-L-2,3-diaminopropionic acid (ODAP), 22 which can cause paralysis of the lower limbs, known as “lathyrism”. An experiment was 23 conducted to measure the nutrient content and ileal digestible amino acid content of a recently 24 released low ODAP lathyrus variety Chalus. Chemical analyses and total tract nutrient 25 digestibility showed that the new lathyrus variety Chalus contained 0.09% ODAP, 265 g/kg 26

Lathyrus cicera as quality feed for laying hens

Introduction Research at CLIMA has indicated that Lathyrus cicera and L. sativus (grasspea) have potential as grain legumes on 100 000 to 300 000 ha of neutral to alkaline soils in low-to-medium rainfall areas of southern Australia. They do not have serious disease problems and are envisaged as low maintenance/low cost crops for the purposes of green manure, managing herbicide resistant weeds, ...

A review of the potential of Lathyrus sativus L. and L. cicera L. grain for use as animal feed

The use of the two closely related species, Lathyrus cicera and L. sativus, as grain legumes for human and animal consumption, dates to the Neolithic period. Due to its tolerance to harsh environmental conditions L. sativus is still used widely for human food in Ethiopia and the Indian sub-continent. Cultivation has decreased in many other regions. The grain of both L. cicera and L. sativus con...

Autogamy and allogamy in genus Lathyrus

Introduction In Tunisia the genus Lathyrus is represented by 15 native species , distributed essentially in marginal environments in the north of the country. These species are under utilised and in the past little effort has been made to expand the selectio...

Similarities between Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (TSP) and neurolathyrism

In 1985 French investigators discovered the association of TSP with HTLV-I, a retrovirus discovered in USA in 1980. A few months after the French publication in 1985 TSP was also associated with HTLV-I in Colombia and Jamaica. In 1986 Japanese researchers published the association of HTLV-I with a similar syndrome and named the disease as HAM (HTLV-I Associated Myelopathy). Since 1988 the World...
